What to Know About Gulf Red Snapper Season in Alabama
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently announced that the Gulf of Mexico federal red snapper season will last three days for recreational anglers from privately owned boats. The season is set to begin on June 1 and ends on June 3. According to US News, this year’s three-day season is due to private recreational anglers going 25 percent over the quota last year. However, anglers are permitted to fish for red snapper on one of the federally permitted charter boats between the dates of June 1 and June 20.
Red snapper is a highly desirable fish with a sweet taste. It’s one of the most sought-after ocean fish, with many willing to pay top dollar for fresh snapper.
A recent post by Great Days Outdoors calls for Alabama anglers to be alert and aware of state water boundaries. There are numerous public reefs, as well as oil and gas platforms that are within the nine-mile state boundary. The article cautions anglers to avoid entering federal waters with Red Snapper caught inside state waters. Great Days Outdoors provides an interactive map where anglers can check on the location and see details for each structure.
