What Does a Wildlife Habitat Consultant Do?

May 31, 2017

If you’re an avid hunter, then you know that in order to have a successful hunting season, the condition of your property must be in tip-top shape. You want to be able to draw in wildlife and provide them with the perfect environment where they can feel comfortable.

Whether you own 200 acres of timberland or a small family farm, proper management improves the habitat on your property for the local wildlife. A detailed and long-term wildlife habitat management plan enhances, improves and protects the natural resources on your property.

Enhancing the habitat on your property with a management plan can improve the quality for local wildlife and gives landowners better recreational opportunities.
Enhancing the habitat on your property with a management plan can improve the quality for local wildlife and gives landowners better recreational opportunities.

As a wildlife habitat consultant with over three decades of knowledge and hands-on experience, I help landowners effectively manage their properties. Since 1973, I have worked with several different federal and state agencies around the country as a park ranger, range technician, fish and wildlife biologist, private lands biologist and wetland specialist. I’ve assisted with the management of a million-acre resource area in southwest Wyoming where I helped with the management of livestock grazing and wildlife use for elk, mule deer, antelope, golden eagles and more.

My enthusiasm for the outdoors also gave me the opportunity to work as a Wildlife Refuge Specialist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for over thirty years. Through this role, I lived and worked on seven different national wildlife refuges in five different states where I worked with landowners to provide them with the best practices for their properties.

For the last twenty years, I have continued to work with private landowners, helping them enhance and restore their properties using tried and true land management practices while making use of government and private cost-share programs, when available.

With a broad range of experience in all kinds of habitats, I am driven to provide you with the best ways to manage your land. I will visit your property and “kick some dirt” with you, and I’ll work with you to develop a management plan that fits your specific goals.

But first, it’s a good idea to get an overview map that not only shows the boundaries of your property but also gives you an idea about neighboring properties. This gives you a better perspective on how your neighbors could potentially affect the wildlife on your property. A wildlife habitat consultant could help you create an overview map as well as evaluate wildlife activities in the area.

It’s also vital to take a look at your habitat specifically. This includes knowing the soils and types of vegetation on your property. Doing this will give you a better idea of what your goals should be with your land and its wildlife.

I enjoy giving back all my knowledge to landowners who are interested in doing the very best for their property. I encourage you to give me a call so we can set up a management plan and you can get the most out of your land.
