What is an “Engineered” Home?
With new Cad/Engineering technology available to small home builders (and now large building contractors), “Engineered” homes have begun making use of wood as basic building structural materials even more profitable and popular.
Simply, the new software available to architects allows the design of homes/buildings based on common lumber lengths/widths with almost zero waste!
According to Pat Layton (Clemson University Wood Utilization + Design Institute), the technology to engineer buildings using common cut timber sizes has now expanded into projects like the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal building in an Alabama hotel which became the first in U.S. built with cross-laminated timber, rather than traditional steel or concrete.
