Alabama is one of the largest poultry-producing states in the United States, with over 1.4 billion broiler chickens<\/a> produced yearly. The state has experienced outbreaks of bird flu in the past, and these outbreaks have had significant impacts on the state’s poultry industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2017, a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu was detected in a commercial poultry flock in Lauderdale County, Alabama. The flock had to be depopulated, and all the birds were destroyed to prevent the disease from spreading further. These measures include restricting access to farms, controlling the movement of birds, and practicing good hygiene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the ways the disease is spread to the farms is by outside visitors and vehicles. This is why limiting visitors to farms is so important. Visitors should all sign a log when visiting a farm and should always wear protective suits and boot covers to prevent bringing any challenges to the flock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some other preventative measures that farmers can practice are sanitizing foot baths in all control rooms, stocking all control rooms with adequate hand-washing supplies, and keeping a pair of special boots for farm use only to prevent tracking in possible diseases. It\u2019s also a good idea to have a special farm truck or side-by-side for use on the farm instead of driving your personal vehicle near the houses. You can easily be in an area with a carrier source and then bring the contagion on your tires or vehicle into the farm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, the bird flu is a significant threat to Alabama’s poultry industry, with potential economic and health impacts. Poultry farmers must take measures to prevent the introduction and spread of the virus, and the government must have effective response plans in case of an outbreak. Protecting our food supply and the poultry industry while preserving a grower\u2019s right to sell and market his farm is of the utmost importance, and following these few biosecurity measures can help us accomplish both of these tasks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
